(Pocket-lint) – At long last, the phenomenon that is Call of Duty: Warzone is on its way to mobile platforms.
Activision has officially announced COD: Warzone Mobile and its coming to iOS and Android next year.
It’s also revealed a few key details for the forthcoming release, while you can listen to an interview with the company’s head of mobile, Chris Plummer, in episode 169 of the Pocket-lint Podcast, out on Friday 16 September 2022.
Here’s what we know about the game so far.
Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile release date
During its Call of Duty: Next online event, Activision announced that the mobile version of Warzone will be released in 2023.
There’s no specific date as yet, but Android phone owners can now pre-register for the game on the Google Play Store. They will be informed when there is more information on its release.
Apple iPhone owners do not yet have the option to pre-register.
Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile platforms
As mentioned above, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will be available on both Android and iOS.
One exciting element is that it will feature cross-play between the two mobile platforms.
Will Warzone Mobile replace Call of Duty Mobile?
Activision has no plans to replace its other, hugely successful Call of Duty Mobile game. As the company’s head of mobile, Chris Plummer, told Pocket-lint, that will continue to run and receive new updates alongside Warzone Mobile: “We’re super excited to have two amazing games in the space,” he said.
Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile gameplay
Although a lot of extra detail will be revealed in time, we do know that Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will be set on the same open-world map as the original PC and console game – Verdansk.
It will also feature the Gulag – the prison level you have to fight your way out of to rejoin the game after you die. The gameplay will be similar too, with 120 live players able to play at once, having skydived onto the map.
Naturally, the game will use touch controls rather than controller or keyboard and mouse, but the concept is the same – survive the longest, basically.
Apart from the map, other elements to make it from the original to mobile Warzone include operators and weapons. There will be mobile-specifc events too, as well as extra playlists and content released over time.
Interestingly, the new Call of Duty games have been built with unified technology that enables items and progression to be shared between them. For example, if you earn a specific gun in one, you may well be able to use it in the others.
