EA announce an Iron Man video game

EA have announced that their EA Motive development team are working on a game based on Marvel’s Iron Man character.  Described as an “all-new single-player, third-person, action-adventure” the game is being  led by Olivier Proulx who worked on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Motive are currently working on the Dead Space remake having previously released the rather good  Star Wars: Squadrons.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with the talented team at Motive Studio to bring their original vision of one of Marvel’s most important, powerful and beloved characters,” said Bill Rosemann, Vice President and Creative Director at Marvel Games. “Their experience delivering both established entertainment worlds and thrilling gameplay — combined with their authentic passion for the armored icon — will fuel our quest to deliver a love letter to a legendary hero in the form of the ultimate Iron Man video game.”

The game was revealed with a post on EA’s website which seems very odd when Disney and Marvel just had a whole day devoted to video games as part of D23. I wonder why it was not announced there?

An interview on GI.Biz reveals that Marvel are not trying to make an MCU in gaming, Iron Man won’t be linked to any other Marvel video game.

“We are here to do everything we can, 360, to help our collaborators bring their vision to life,” explained Bill Rosemann, the VP and creative director of Marvel Games. “How can we help? Can we be a source of background? There has been six decades of Iron Man comic books, we can start with: ‘read these ten stories’. We are here for advice. We are here for talking about what game they want to make, and how the gameplay matches the wish fulfilment of the character… the set pieces, the music, the characters, what the story is about. People expect a great story from a Marvel and Motive game. It’s the heart of what we do. We will offer everything that we can to help give that Marvel perspective, to create that 100% authentic Marvel experience, so that when people play it they’re saying: ‘this was made by fans’.”

Proulx adds: “But [Marvel is] also really pushing us to make this Motive’s version of Iron Man. What is the new story that we can tell with Tony Stark? That is incredibly empowering for the team. It’s very much about collaboration and working together on a weekly basis, pushing ideas, challenging each other… it’s a great experience.”

Platforms and a release date for the game have yet to be announced but the relatively small EA Motive are working on Dead Space until the end of the year so I wouldn’t expect Iron Man until at least 2025.
